Wedding Gifts

When you go to a wedding or shower do you always buy off of the registry?

I try to.

I have heard so many horror stories of brides who end up with 100 picture frames and no china.  I know one bride who got 6 different wine decanters.  She is Mormon and doesn't drink (he had just recently converted but many of his family friends were unaware of this).  Another bride had a shower with about 30 people in attendance and I was the only person to have bought off registry!

I did really well and actually got almost everything off of my registry (I got everything but an air mattress, a few of my crystal glasses, and my trash can - I actually got ALL of my china!)  I did get a few off registry gifts though.  Some of them I really appreciated - like a handmade afghan, a handmade stained glass cross, a set of holiday bundt pans (along with some great mixes), a springfrom pan (I hadn't thought to register for one but I love cheescake), a few of the Arthur Court Butterfly pieces (I love them but they are exclusive to Neiman's and I didn't register there), and a gorgeous crystal  pitcher that coordinated with my crystal but was bigger (I had
already received my pitcher and she had overheard me mention that I wished it was big enough to serve sweet tea!)  My point is, that sometimes going off registry is a good thing.

But other times you get Percy the Pig (see above photo). Someone spent a lot of money on this incredibly odd Fitz and Floyd Platter.  And I'm not sure what to do with it.  I've considered a white elephant gift but for whatever sentimental reason I can't get rid of Percy.  He sits on a shelf in my storage room and every once and while I look at him - and giggle.

What off registry gifts did you receive that made you go - huh what?  Have you regifted them, donated them, or do you have things in storage?

  1. We did really good with our registry gifts -- ALL our china and crystal, but zero towels! It was funny.... The worst non registry gift was a shadow box with silk roses and plastic water beads on the petals. A thank you note was written and the gift went directly into the Goodwill box.

  2. OMG ~ Percy is so cute!! My grandma collects pigs and would love him. :) My Dad bought me a crazy crystal dolphin with a silver & rhinestone head when he was in Hawaii. I don't even like dolphins but I have it on my desk to remind me every day that my Dad loves me. :) It wasn't a wedding gift but still the same concept. :)

  3. Haha Precy is too funny! People were pretty good about buying off our registry but I did get A LOT of recipe books that I def did not register for since I do not cook. And why buy recipe books when you can get any recipe imaginable online? Oh and this hidious purple vase that does not match our color scheme AT ALL!

  6. I got a lot of stuff off my registry and good items off of it too. The oddest thing came from my dad, who was trying to be silly. He got me smoked salmon. Odd....

  8. Hilarious. That pig is really something.

My "best" off-registry gift was a wooden cheese serving board in the shape of a rooster, with a sterling silver head that was *meant to* be attached to the board. By the time we received it, the head had fallen off, so it is now known to me & my husband as "the headless (insert naughty word for rooster) platter". Funnier still is that it was from the fancy-pants gift shop in town, so we quickly returned it and put the credit towards buying more sterling.

  9. I recently got some odd looking candle holders and silver trays that aren't anywhere near my style. I'm returning them this weekend.

By the way, I loved your entry in my Cozy October giveaway. I can totally relate to the lack of Fall. I chose your entry as a winner so if you could please send me your e-mail address I will pass it along to Jennifer Grove and she can send out your wonderful candle.

  10. As for my wedding, I got ALL of our registry gifts. We got really lucky. But, we didn't register for china. With the Army we are going to be moving quite a bit and I was deathly afraid it would break. So, I think it is something I will buy later on in life. Maybe once I start working :-). But I definitely got some weird gifts too. Why do people think that "interesting" candle sticks made good wedding gifts? We got about 5 sets of the dang ugliest candlesticks made!

For other people, I always, always, always buy off the registry. Unless it is someone I know REALLY well and feel comfortable getting something else (but, even then, it would be something useful like monogrammed bar glasses or something). I figure, these people took the time to pick out exactly what they wanted and my personal taste is no substitute for theirs!

  11. I pretty much got everything on my registry - but we did get this odd cream cake platter and server that was gold lined. It actually looked like it was from the 1970's (the box was kind of worn). I think it might have been regifted from her wedding back then! I think we ended up donating it when we moved to our house. Oh well - it's a good memory I guess.

  12. We received so many picture frames and serving platters that were so ugly. We got an amazing shower gift from a family friend and then received the worst wedding present from them, neon yellow place mats. We also received a crystal vase that my husband refers to as the V (insert woman's body part) vase. It went right back as soon as we opened it!!

  14. My Husband and I end up talking about this every time we use gifts from our wedding while we're entertaining for friends, or any time we need to buy a gift for someone else. We got a few things that were totally random. One or two worked out, a few we still look at like "huh???"...one thing I think the giver got ripped off on - they ordered it online and it probably looked nice - but turns out to be super cheap. I have half a mind to tell the giver that they got ripped off...but I'll never actually tell. We appreciate all the gifts, seriously, all!
