Need Help

Ugh!  Yesterday I interviewed Hillary Morgan, an incredible photographer, (you should seriously check out some of her engagement shots) but way out of our price range.  (Liz - you really should interview her - she was wonderful!)  Today I interviewed another photographer who wasn't so good (although the price was certainly right!)

These are photographers 4 and 5 in my interview process.  I thought I was done with photographer interviews after I got married - but seriously I think finding one to take pictures of my little family (me, husband, and puppy) is even harder!  My bids have ranged from $50 to $1000 for a two hour photo session!  Have prices gone up that much in the two years since I got married?!?!  I was thinking I'd pay more like $150-200 to have someone take shots of us for an hour or two.

So I found a photographer who has never shot people before (only cars) and is looking to build his portfolio.  He is willing to shoot us for free to build his portfolio.  I'm a little bit nervous about this - I've got one shot because I won't get Casey dressed without a baseball cap twice!  Have any of you ever done this?  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Does anyone know of a reasonably priced photographer in Dallas who will be able to work wonders with a non-photographic wife, a husband, and an adorable puppy?

  1. you can't beat free! I have done that a few times.. I am a photographer, and when you are building your portfolio, you can't really charge people when you dont have the experience. Don't be afraid to step in with ideas or to tell him what you want. I would love to help you out, but you'd have to fly me to texas! haha. =) Good luck!

  2. What is the worst that could happen? Candid shots are the best. We use a friend to do ours and they never totally turn out right. But another friend was working to build her portfolio and took Ellie to a park and shot her for my Mother's Day present that year. These were the best photos of her ever (well so far at least). I say go for it. :)

  3. The guy who did our engagement photos was in the same situation. He is a friend who is a professional photographer but he had only done sports.

They are by far the best photos we have together. We dressed up in formal attire: me in a red BR dress and him in a suit. We went to Cenntenial Park, and we had a ball.

Seriously. Best pictures ever. Completely free. Even better than the wedding pictures my parents spent upwards of $7,000 on.

  4. have you tried brooks whittington? I looked at him for our wedding photos but he was out of our price range but maybe he is more reasonable for 1-2 sessions?

We plan on getting him to do some photos of us once we get a puppy!

  5. I think you should try him out! Free is always better than paying, and if you don't love them you might be able to convince your sweet hubby to do it again! :)

  7. Even if it is not what you were looking for it is free! You have nothing to lose but an hour of your time. I think this sounds great and for all you know this man could be the next big thing! Wish I could help you with a Dallas photographer, but I only know event photographers. Sorry!

  8. I agree with everyone else...try him out! He may be completly amazing! Then you get free, amazing photos :)

If he is terrible, well, who cares? You aren't out any money :)

Go for it! (and be sure to show us the proofs!)

  9. Look up Kimberly whylie. She does babies, but also couples. Also john haynesworth is doing free photos tommorow night in Highland Park Village. Also, Gittings, and if you want formal, Charis.

  10. One of my best friends is a photographer and she's fairly reasonable, lives here in Dallas and is an SMU alum... She took the picture of me that's on my sidebar (and, let's be honest, I never look like that!). I'll e-mail you her contact info, just in case. And, she's fantastic with pets!

  11. You know, some of the high schools in the area have phenomenal art departments and kids who take advanced photography. They work cheap and actually come up with some awesome shots.
